Oceanside Collegiate Academy (OCA) recognizes that a concussions and head injuries are a commonly reported injury in children and adolescents who participate in sports and recreational activities. Concussions often are characterized by the onset of impairment of cognitive and/or physical functioning, and are caused by a blow to the head, face, or neck or a blow to the body that causes a sudden jarring of the head. Recovery from concussions will vary. Avoiding re-injury and over-exertion until fully recovered are the cornerstones of proper concussion management

OCA is committed to safe practice and provides a Sports Concussion Management Plan to ensure that (i) coaches, athletic directors, Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC), administrators, volunteers, student-athletes, and their parents are aware of the short-and long-term effects of concussions; (ii) student-athletes sustaining concussions are removed from play immediately and referred appropriately; (iii) student-athletes who have sustained concussions are returned to play only after receiving appropriate medical care, adequate time to heal, and demonstrating no symptoms consistent with a concussion.

Prior to resuming participation in interscholastic sports activities, the student-athlete must receive clearance from OCA's Athletic Trainer to participate in such activities and complete the mandated six (6) day "Return to Play" process.

OCA's Concussion Management Plan

The concussion program consists of the following components:

  1. Education – Annual training for all OCA Coaches, Volunteers, Athletic Trainers and Administrators.

  2. Proper sideline management/guidelines.

  3. Proper follow-up on all reported concussions.

  4. Proper Return to Play Protocol/Clearance back to athletics.
